BIO
Alexander Tups studied Biology at Heinrich Heine University and Philipps University of Marburg, specializing in Animal Physiology, Genetics, and Developmental Biology. He completed his Ph.D. with summa cum laude at the Rowett Research Institute and Philipps University, where he investigated neuroendocrine mechanisms regulating seasonal body weight, supported by Marie Curie and Boehringer Ingelheim Fonds Scholarships.
After a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Otago, Tups received a prestigious junior group leader grant from the German Ministry of Education and Research, establishing his independent research group on neuronal nutrition physiology early in his career. His groundbreaking work on brain regulation of body weight and glucose homeostasis earned him numerous awards, including the Michael Harbuz Prize (2009), the Ernst and Berta Scharrer Award (2014), Otago University's Commercialisation Researcher Award (2023), and the Research Excellence Prize from the Physiological Society of New Zealand (2023).
Tups is dedicated to research translation and commercialization. His research has been pivotal in identifying the role of neuroinflammation in metabolic disease, and his laboratory now focuses on pharmacological strategies to address the root cause of these conditions. He has successfully commercialized a patented nutraceutical for blood glucose support, based on 12 years of biomedical research.
Now an Associate Professor at the University of Otago, Tups has published 48 peer-reviewed papers, most as lead author. He also frequently reviews research for leading international journals and grant agencies. His expertise even extends to advising Dunedin's city council on the health impacts of artificial lighting, influencing the installation of warm street lighting in the city.

I am getting my mojo back with regards to my health and running after treatment for breast cancer, I connected with Lisa as I was looking for positive influences from people who are long distance runners and understand our mindset. Lisa’s podcasts have been a key factor in getting me out of a negative space where I allowed others limiting beliefs to stop me from following my heart and what I believe is right for me. After 18 months of being in cancer recovery mode I wanted to get out of the cancer mindset and back to achieving goals that had been put aside. Listening to Pushing The Limits has put me onto other great podcasts, and in the process I have learnt so much and am on a pathway to a much better place with my mindset and health. Thanks so much Lisa for doing what you do and always being you.
